What Pokemon Taught Us About Life
Remember the summer when Pokemon Go came out? Just one simple game & it turned our worlds around.
Those of us that never left the home were suddenly out & running around the streets, looking for our nearest Poke-Stops, we found new friends every time we went on a Poke-hunt, we built communities based on our mutual love for all things Pokemon.
And let’s not even talk about the Stampede’s and chaos that took place.
All this over just one game? Absolutely not. It’s an emotion, it’s a life, it’s our entire childhood.
Pokemon taught us how to live, how to be a friend & so much more. Let’s take a walk down down memory lane shall we. Here are a few of the million life lessons we learnt ( and could still learn ) from Pokemon.
1) “Family” is not just the one we were born into
If there’s one thing we learnt from Charmander’s journey, it is that there is a family out there for each of us. Char-char was left-behind & forgotten, even while his heart was so filled with love. His loss & gloom didn’t last too long fortunately. He found his new family in Ash & gang & went on to have a life more amazing than the one he left behind.
Just like him, we will all find our place in the world, if we only hold out for the very best & keep our faith strong.
2) If you love someone, let them go
Butterfree was set free ( wasn’t trying to make a pun there ) by Ash despite it being difficult. He saw that Butterfree could have a happier life in a different place, so he let go.
We need to realise that sometimes, the best things for the people we love, are far away from us. It’s okay to let go if you know that it’s the best thing for them. If your partner or friend finds a wonderful opportunity that’s across the globe, find a way to put on a smile & be strong. Let them go without a heavy heart. Let them find a wonderful new life while you work on yours.
3) Small Sacrifices Can Lead To Larger Happiness
Pikachu chooses to stay with Ash over freedom. In that moment, he had two choices : run away into the wild & live with his kind, or stay with his partner & continue on their journey. In staying with Ash, though he missed out on some experiences, Pikachu found so much joy & victories so sweet, it couldn’t be contested.
When you want to build a life & a long-lasting relationship with someone, whether a friend, a husband/wife or a family, we may have to make small sacrifices along the way. And when we do make these sacrifices, we need to remember not to hold it against the people in our life. The greater good could come first sometimes.
4) We Can’t “Use” People For Our Selfish Gains
The wise & mysterious Mewtwo taught us many things about the world, its ways & life. But the most important lesson is to not take advantage of others.
Everyone we meet comes with a new skill, a new talent or maybe they’re more affluent. None of that is an excuse for us to make use of their gifts & not return the favour. We need to learn to be compassionate & caring. Life is about “give & take”, not just “take”.
5) We Are Never Alone When We Have Our Friends
When in need, we can turn to our friends & despite our insecurities, they will be around to help us. Ash’s Pokemon huddle around him to keep him from freezing in an Icy cave. When he has lost all hope, feels alone & can’t think straight, they got his back.
And we have our friends! Let’s also remember to be that friend for ours?
If your friend is feeling low, going through a rough patch or is just tired of life, go find them & give them a hug. Be a friend that they can count on.
6) Change, But Only When We’re Ready.
In Vermillion City, Pikachu has the toughest internal battle. He needs to decide whether or not to evolve. He takes his time, fights his thoughts & decides on his course eventually. And when he does, he is supported by his friends.
In life, we may find ourselves at junctures where we may need to change ourselves or a part of ourselves. While we may be pushed into a corner, we need to remember that true change can only happen from the inside.
7) Never Judge – We Don’t Know Their Journey
Remember Sabrina? Creepy, eerie, odd, evil & so many similar words come to mind when we think of her. Though she may have seemed strange & a little scary when we’re first introduced to her, we go on to learn that she had been through a treacherous journey to get where she was.
Just like her, we have no idea what most people are going through. We don’t know what they’ve been through & we haven’t a clue about their life. We need to pause before we judge & listen before we come to our own conclusions about people.
Now don’t these all seem like difficult life lessons? The kind we learn from experience? Well, we learned it all from a cartoon! One with imaginary animals with superpowers, nonetheless. Just goes to show that you can learn a lot about life from the strangest of places, the places we least expect. So let’s always keep an open mind & be ready to learn from everything around us.
