Staying Happy In the New Normal
They call it the new normal & yet there is nothing “normal” about any of it. Staying at home all day, every day, never leaving the house without a mask & our beds becoming our work desks. Heck, even our favourite dancing shoes are living the retirement life in a corner of the house.
But can we find happiness even in these trying times? Absolutely! Here are a few things that seemed to have helped us…
- Sticking to a routine
There’s nowhere to go & no rush-hour traffic to beat, but if we just laze around & wake up at noon, things could easily get out of hand. So step one is to find a routine that suits you, & stick to it. Wake up with the sun & find something to do… Maybe you have a fun neighbour you could make friends with for those early-morning moments or you could get up & sing “ Morning’s here! Sunshine is Here!! “ Be that annoyingly jolly neighbour for someone else 😀
- Dress up for work
“Look Good. Feel Good”
It’s not just a clever marketing phrase of a popular brand, it’s also the truth! You may not have an office to go to, but trust me when I say this, dressing up & sitting down for a long day of work can take away half the blues that come with the hour-long Zoom calls.
And I’m pretty sure you haven’t explored the newfound fashion-field – Zoom Fashion!
- Step Out
Now, this may seem counter-intuitive & it would be… except we’re just talking about the casual stroll along your apartment compound or a quick walk around the park or just sitting out on your patio or balcony & soaking in some sun! Let’s not forget what nature looks like.
Getting some fresh air can boost your mood like nothing else. One quick stroll = 10 hours worth of peace & tranquillity. Don’t forget your masks!
- Pick up a skill
Remember that guitar class you said you were so thrilled about taking… two years ago? But you never found the time & things were always a little too hectic. Well, we’ve been given the gift of time, my friend! So let’s dust off all our old aspirations & get to picking up a skill that we’ve always wanted to add to our roster. Up-skilling has never had a better time!
- Find new shows & movies
No matter what your interest, there’s a list of shows out there for you. A lot of creative folks across the world have taken up this time to put together curated lists of movies & shows for scores of genres. Be it thrillers, be it psychological issues or the one you love to hate, rom-coms… It’s all out there for you to find.
- Spend time with your friends
Ahh! How we miss hanging out with our friends & painting the town red every weekend! Fret not. Technology has got your back. With apps like HouseParty, Netflix Party & QTalk, you can “hang out” with your friends virtually. Those group chats you used to dread will now be your favourites. Spending time with your friends build a sense of belonging & will keep you from slipping down the loneliness lane.
- Attend Workshops
Workshops are a great way to break up the monotony & meet new people (online of course) Whether it’s painting your next masterpiece, baking a giant batch of muffins or venting with Slam Poetry, there’s a Zoom workshop out there for you.
Now that you can attend workshops in your pyjamas, what’s stopping you? At WAAMH, we have Culinary & Art Therapy workshops every week.
- Turn Into a Home Cook
Once seen as a burden of a chore, cooking has become the go-to activity during this Pandemic. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, head to Tik-Tok & just take a look at the hashtag, #cooking From Dalgona Coffee to Pancake cereal ( the mark of a great breakfast ) there are just so many things for you to try out.
- Get a Work-Out On
A healthy body & a healthy mind go hand-in-hand. So let’s not skip our exercise routine. No gym? That’s alright. There are tons of videos on Youtube & other platforms alike, on working out at home. We even caught one titled “28-day ab challenge” And if you can get toned abs in 28 days, at home, why are we waiting?!
- Take Care of Your Mental Health
If you’re feeling down & the lockdown seemingly makes it all worse, things may start to get bleak. Reach out, talk to someone, speak out about your worries & find ease & peace for yourself. The isolation & monotony can bring anyone down. You are not alone & we’re all here for you.
While we have no clue how long the new normal will last, we can certainly help each other deal with it a little better so we’re brand new & ready for the world when all this is done 🙂
If you need someone to talk to, reach out to us & we’ll help you through it all.
